Active vs Passive Battery Balancing
Understand active and passive cell balancing, what to ask about a LiFePO4 battery, and when battery or BMS diagnosis is useful in Lebanon.

Why cells need balancing
A lithium battery contains individual cells whose charge levels can differ. In a series-connected pack, a cell that reaches its limit early can restrict how much energy the pack can use. Balancing manages differences in charge; it does not turn a damaged or lower-capacity cell into a new one.

Passive balancing releases energy as heat
Passive balancing removes some charge from cells with higher charge levels, commonly through resistors. That energy becomes heat. Its comparatively simple circuitry can suit a battery design, but balancing current and thermal limits affect how quickly it can correct a mismatch. The correct operating conditions depend on the BMS design.

Active balancing transfers energy
Active balancing transfers energy between cells or parts of the pack instead of deliberately dissipating all the balancing energy as heat. Depending on its architecture, it can operate during charging or discharging. It requires additional circuitry and control, so the label “active” alone does not establish the performance or suitability of a complete battery.

Questions to ask before choosing a battery
Ask for the exact cell and BMS models, the documented balancing method, its rated current and the conditions that enable it. Ask how the complete pack is tested and supported. A balancing specification should be considered alongside cell condition, protection and the intended application. LiFePO4 describes a battery chemistry; the balancing technology must be verified separately for the particular model.
Active balancing and battery support at BTC Energy Solutions S.A.R.L.
BTC Energy Solutions S.A.R.L. uses active balancing in its own batteries and designs and builds high-voltage battery storage systems with active balancing. Our Hadath, Jamous workshop also offers lithium battery repair, BMS diagnosis, battery cells and standalone active balancers. Send your battery model and the problem through WhatsApp on +961 76 629 168. The appropriate assessment and whether repair is suitable depend on the battery’s condition.
